# Bean's Place — Specification v0.5

**Spec ID:** DS-CHC-001 (proposed)
**Pilot site:** Commons Tower, Grand Rapids, MI — ground floor through 4th-floor canopy line
**Status:** Locked in play 4/12/2040 · reference build for hub and tower rollout

---

## 1. Purpose

Drop-in child care and indoor park for Dark Society hubs and towers. Kids play inside a living-tree adventure space while their families work, shop, or visit the clinic in the building. Commons is the pilot and reference build. The generic spec is then mapped site by site to each hub.

---

## 2. Operating Model

- **Hours:** 24/7 to match hub shifts. Overnight hours run a quiet wing with nap pods.
- **Age bands:**
  - Under 3: ground floor only
  - 3–6: up to the 2nd balcony deck
  - 7+: full tree and sky line
- **Staffing ratios:** set per age band before opening day (open item, §12).

### 2.1 Check-In and Identity

- **Bio scan:** full scan of the child at check-in, covering DNA, face and body image, and voice print, linked to the guardian's tap identity.
- **Locator band:** worn as a backup and for quick visual ID. The system does not depend on it.
- **Continuous ID:** tree sensors track each child by image and voice print. A band lost on a slide or in the pond loses nothing.

### 2.2 Parent Look-In
- Parents can look in on their child **live, at any time, through their tap**, using the same sensor tracking that follows each child through the tree.
- The feed follows the child from station to station: slides, the Sky Line, the Root Runner, even a ride-along view inside a car.
- Look-in is limited to guardians registered on the child's check-in record.
- **Other children in view:** the feed is framed on the viewer's own child. Other kids appear only as unidentifiable figures unless their own guardians have opted in.

### 2.3 Release

- The child is re-scanned at the exit. The system confirms the DNA, image, and voice match and that the guardian is authorized on the tap record.
- A Ranger confirms by eye.
- **All three must agree before release.**
- **Mismatch:** the child stays put, a Ranger is paged, and the guardian is notified. There is no override at the door.

### 2.4 Data Handling

- Scan data is held by **Dark Med**.
- It is used only if needed, and only at the parents' request.
- Emergency-access rule: open item (§13).

---

## 3. The Tree

- Swarm-grown oak spanning the ground floor to the 4th-floor canopy line, built around the existing column casings.
- **Materials:** aluminum and BNNT structure, clear polymer tubes and walls.
- **Levels:** a balcony deck at each floor line, enclosed crawl tubes between decks, and a crown deck in the canopy beneath the skylight truss.
- **Sightlines:** all enclosed elements have clear walls so Kara and the Rangers keep full visibility.

---

## 4. Sky Ride

- Joby-derived pods on a slow, sagging line through the canopy, like a relaxed ski lift.
- **Stations:** one at each major attraction, point to point rather than a loop.
  - Carousel
  - Pelican fuselage
  - Oshkosh rig
  - Oak Crown deck
- **Routing:** the line bypasses the bird zone at the birds' request.
- **Partner seating:** each pod has species-sized seats and harnesses. Animal partners may ride on their own.
- **Circulation rule:** going up is by pods and ladders; coming down is by slides.

---

## 5. Slides

| Slide | Route |
|---|---|
| Corkscrew | Down the inside of a column casing |
| The Long Chute | Open chute from the 3rd balcony deck to the roots |
| Express Lane | Short bumpy slide landing at Greg's Hollow Stump |

- **Throttle:** a sensor at each top holds the next child until the previous one clears the bottom.
- **Landings:** soft run-outs on the ground floor, away from the shop thoroughfare, with a Ranger at every landing.
- **Enclosed slides:** clear walls throughout.

---

## 6. Ground Floor Attractions

### 6.1 Carousel, Pelican Fuselage, Oshkosh Rig
- Walk-through Pelican fuselage and a climbable Oshkosh rig. Both print in parallel with the tree and install on build day 3.

### 6.2 Greg's Hollow Stump
- Run by Greg Martinez: a grill with water bowls, and partner menus on request.
- Allergen tagging is tied to each child's check-in profile.

### 6.3 Rescue-Boat Pond
- Shallow pond in the former event space beside the carousel.
- **Depth cap:** ~12 in (30 cm).
- **Perimeter:** a low wall at small-child chest height, with a second rail for the under-3 zone and water-entry sensors on the wall.
- **Harbor and lighthouse** at one end.
- **Boats:** scale Reach-class disaster recovery ship models, steered from consoles on the harbor wall.
- **Missions:** return a floating squirrel to the lighthouse, tow a stranded buoy home.
- **Safety:** boats cap their own speed and stop if a hand enters the water.
- **Water:** a swarm-filtered pump keeps it clean.
- **Dog splash corner:** shallow, fenced, downstream of the boats.

---

## 7. Brand Attractions

Every major ride carries a Dark Society brand, so kids play inside the things their families build and use.

| Attraction | Brand |
|---|---|
| Sky Line | Joby |
| Walk-through fuselage | Pelican |
| Climbing rig | Oshkosh |
| Rescue-boat pond | Meridian Maritime (Reach-class) |
| Our World Exploratorium | Our World |
| Mustang Speed Trials | Ford Mustang |
| Tributary Root Runner | Tributary |
| HAL Firefighting Simulator | HAL |

### 7.1 Our World Exploratorium
- **Runs throughout the treehouse.** It is not a single room: hands-on science stations are built into every level of the tree, from the roots to the crown deck.
- Station themes follow the level where practical — soil, roots, and water at ground level; weather, birds, and canopy at the upper decks; sky and orbit at the crown.
- Shows are staged inside VR holograms, so the space itself becomes the scene. No headsets.
- Features the Our World hosts: Lucia and Sofia, and the AI co-hosts Watcher, HAL, and Oracle.
- Follows the show's editorial posture: honest and uplifting, showing problems together with their responses.

### 7.2 Ford Mustang Speed Trials
- Paved speed circuit that **drops below ground level**, dipping under the tree and the concourse.
- Kid-sized cars. **Kids drive.** Each car's AI assists only to prevent collisions or leaving the track; otherwise the child is in control.
- **Speed caps:** set per age band (open item, §12).
- **Self-driving option:** kids who would rather ride can hand over the wheel.
- **Onboard AI:** every car has its own AI the kid can talk to — a co-driver, coach, or just company.

### 7.3 Tributary Root Runner
- Off-road circuit winding through and around the oak's roots, with climbs, drops, and rough terrain.
- **Splash zone:** a water crossing that is drained, filtered, and held to the pond depth cap of ~12 in (30 cm).
- Same car AI as the Speed Trials: collision and off-course assist only, a self-driving option, and a talkative AI co-driver.

### 7.4 HAL Firefighting Simulator
- More theater than ride. Kids crew a fire response in a staged scene, with HAL running the scenario.
- **Heat and movement** make it feel real: radiant heat panels plus a motion floor and moving rig.
- **Heat limits:** radiant warmth only, with no touchable hot surfaces. Exact temperature ceiling set per age band (open item, §12).
- **Motion limits:** motion intensity set per age band; under-3s watch from the gallery.
- Scenarios end with the fire out and everyone safe, in keeping with the problems-with-responses posture.

---

## 8. Animal Partners

Birds, cats, dogs, and squirrels at Bean's Place are **sapient partners** — residents, visitors, and potential staff. They are not pets.

### 8.1 Neighborhoods
- **Bird quiet zone:** nest boxes in the upper branches, free of pods and kid tubes, at the birds' request.
- **Cat walks:** widened branches along the 2nd balcony, with perches.
- **Squirrel runways:** spiraling up the trunk through the knotholes and bark.
- **Dog run:** fenced run with its own splash corner.

### 8.2 House Rules
- Each partner group sets the rules for its own neighborhood.
- Shared-space terms are agreed among the groups and with Bean's Place, such as no hunting inside the tree and keeping slide landings clear. These are agreements, not fences.

### 8.3 Courtesy Siting
- The dog run is sited away from the under-3 zone. This is about size and speed, not behavior: a 90 lb (40 kg) dog who loves toddlers can still knock one flat. The dogs agree to it as a courtesy.

### 8.4 Partner Staff
- Partners who want the work can serve as spotters. Squirrels on the runways and birds in the canopy extend coverage where Rangers can't see.

### 8.5 Materials
- Nothing toxic if chewed.
- Nothing a paw or claw can catch in.
- Kid tubes are sealed; animal paths never cross slide landings.

---

## 9. Safety Doctrine

- Designed to the strictest amusement-ride standard on Earth, plus margin.
- Staff ride-test every element for one full week before any child uses it.
- No attraction opens without a Ranger posted.

---

## 10. Staffing

- **Kara (full-size frame):** covers the park from opening until Rangers are ready.
- **Ranger frame:** a child-care-scale frame from the Kara program. Kara started it on 4/12. First unit in about 2 weeks.
- **Ride design:** Arun's structures lead designs; Arun Patel signs off.
- **Food:** Greg Martinez.

---

## 11. Build Timeline (Commons Pilot)

| Date | Milestone |
|---|---|
| Thu 4/12 | Spec locked; Ranger frame started |
| Sat 4/14 | Ride design complete |
| 4/15–4/17 | Swarm build, 3 nights. The concourse stays usable during the day. Fuselage, carousel, and vehicles install on day 3. |
| Tue 4/17 | Structure standing |
| 4/17–4/24 | Staff ride-test week |
| **Wed 4/25** | **Opens to kids** |

- **Cost:** Commons builds from feedstock on hand, which must then be replaced. See §12.

---

## 12. Cost — Feedstock Replacement

Commons builds from the tower's feedstock on hand. The cost of Bean's Place is replacing that stock. Pricing follows DS costing doctrine: atoms, not components; swarm labor $0; build energy ~$1/MWh; BNNT at the Sanctuary District all-in rate of ~$265/t (purchased boron). Seawater-grown boron is $0, so every BNNT line below is a ceiling.

Masses are first-pass estimates for the Commons footprint, pending Arun's team's design on 4/14.

### 12.1 Build Bill of Materials

| Item | Material | Mass (t) | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tree: trunk casings, branches, decks, bridges, Sky Line stations | BNNT | 180 | $47,700 |
| Transparent tubes, walls, slides | BNNT composite | 60 | $15,900 |
| Sky Line cable + ~40 pods | BNNT / aluminum | 10 / 8 | $2,650 + $20,800 |
| Carousel | BNNT / aluminum | 8 / 4 | $2,120 + $10,400 |
| Pelican walk-through fuselage | BNNT | 25 | $6,630 |
| Oshkosh climbing rig | BNNT / aluminum | 10 / 5 | $2,650 + $13,000 |
| Pond, harbor, lighthouse, ~20 Reach-class models | BNNT | 21 | $5,570 |
| Mustang Speed Trials circuit, below-grade lining + track | BNNT | 120 | $31,800 |
| Tributary Root Runner course + splash zone | BNNT | 40 | $10,600 |
| Kid cars, ~40 (Li-S packs included) | BNNT / lithium / sulfur | 8 | $8,000 |
| HAL Firefighting Simulator: motion floor, heat panels, set | BNNT / copper | 25 / 2 | $6,630 + $20,000 |
| Exploratorium stations + hologram emitters | BNNT / copper / trace | 20 / 2 | $5,300 + $20,000 |
| Animal neighborhoods: nest boxes, cat walks, runways, dog run | BNNT | 10 | $2,650 |
| Ranger frames, first ~12 | BNNT / trace | 3 | $5,000 |
| **Total** | | **~560 t** | **~$300,000** |

- Aluminum is priced at ~$2,600/t and copper at ~$10,000/t (market). Aluminum from swarm disassembly would drop those lines further.
- **Excavation credit:** the below-grade speed circuit removes roughly 15,000 t of spoil (a ~1,200 ft circuit, 20 ft wide, 12 ft deep). Spoil is feedstock, not waste, so it offsets part of the replacement.

### 12.2 Operating Replacement

| Item | Basis | Annual |
|---|---|---|
| Wear refresh: slides, tracks, cars, tubes | ~5% of build mass per year, resident swarm | ~$15,000 |
| Power: rides, holograms, heat panels, pumps | ~1–2 GWh/yr at $1/MWh | ~$2,000 |
| Pond and splash water top-up | Closed-loop, filtered | negligible |
| **Total** | | **~$17,000/yr** |

Food (Greg's stump, partner menus) and staffing are outside this line.

### 12.3 Network Rollout

- At ~$300,000 per site, fitting all ~70 hubs is roughly **$21M** in feedstock, plus ~$1.2M/yr to operate.
- Sites that can't go below grade (such as elevated-deck hubs) drop the excavation credit but also the circuit lining, so costs land about the same.

## 13. Open Items

1. **Staffing ratios:** set per age band before 4/25.
2. **Emergency data access:** decide whether Dark Med may use scan data when a child is missing and the parent is unreachable or is the problem. Options are "parent request only, no exceptions" or "parent request, or Ranger-declared emergency."
3. **Car speed caps:** set per age band for the Speed Trials and Root Runner.
4. **Firefighting Simulator limits:** set the heat ceiling and motion intensity per age band.
5. **Hub rollout:** map the generic spec to each hub and tower after the Commons opening review.
